Indonesian Film Week 2016: An Introduction to Indonesian Cinema

// Anthology Film Archives, NYC

The theme in this pilot project highlights the IFF spirit, "An Introduction to Indonesian Cinemas" with the tagline, "a movie sampling and coffee tasting." Five feature films and four short films are the main menus of this two-day event while a variety of Indonesian coffee is ready for tasting. Filosofi Kopi (2015), a film by Angga Dwimas Sasongko that tells a soul-searching story of two friends through coffee will open the Indonesian Film Week NY. The first day will be closed by a film about two workers whose love story is threatened by a corruption case in A Copy of My Mind (2015) by Joko Anwar. The second day of the film week will begin with four short movies, two of them brought home international awards. They are Maryam (2014), a film by Sidi Saleh, the winner of best short film at Orrizonti 71 Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica 2014 in Venice, and In The Year of Monkey (2016) by Wregas Bhanuteja as the winner of Leica Cine Discovery Prize – Best Short Film, 55th Semaine de La Critique at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

The films at this event depict Indonesia in various perspective with diverse social and political condition, different culture and economic backgrounds that enable people in New York to understand and see the real colors of Indonesia. IFF hopes to make Indonesian Film Week NY as an annual event so that Indonesian movies are alive not only in Indonesia but also known by the American public.
