Indonesian National Film Day 2017: Finding Indonesia

// NYU Global Spiritual Life, NYC

To celebrate Indonesian National Film Day, we invite you to expand your knowledge about Indonesia through our movie screening event, Finding Indonesia, featuring three Indonesian movies: Balik Jakarta (Return Jakarta), On the Origin of Fear, and Mencari Hilal (The Crescent Moon).

Balik Jakarta (Return Jakarta) tells the story of Togar, a fresh graduate who works as a motorcycle taxi driver, and Günther, a German tourist who brings an old picture of his childhood house in the area of Kebayoran. Only with the picture as a clue, and without any complete address, Günther and Togar look for the house.

Set entirely in an audio recording studio, On the Origin of Fear shows a director pushing a soldier to the limit as he takes on the roles of both victim and aggressor in a scripted anti-communist overdub.

Mencari Hilal (The Crescent Moon) takes viewers on a journey of father and son. Mahmud, an Islamic conservative, and Heli, a young liberal, are pushed to travel together in search of "hilal", the very first new crescent marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Through these movies, we are hoping you would gain insights about lives in Indonesia and better understand that one of the beauties of Indonesia is its complex heterogeneity.
